This quilt is a photo transferred piece from an original photo that I took when visiting a winery in Missouri. I then used a variety of threads to free-motion quilt the piece to enhance the butterfly and the lilacs. All the work was done on a domestic sewing machine. Lilacs are my favorite flowers and the contrast of the butterfly is dynamic. I smile and think of Spring when I see it.

This Heron was photographed by my friend Jone Palmquist, flying near Eugene Oregon. It is thread painted, and surrounded by embroidered flowers, gauze and commercial cotton shores, with iron dyed silk on the opposite shore. The lake itself is batik, fused in place without quilting stitches. In real life, the Rainbow Heron is normally shades of grey and blue and are frequently seen in this area.

Misty Fuse was used to fuse the silk to batting. The top was embellished with a variety of stitches, threads, and beads, then fused to a backing and hand-quilted.

This piece is a modified view of the traditional yin/yang figure. Rather than connecting the two halves, a gap has been added and the two halves are connected with the use of old women's garters and holes cut into the two halves. The fiber portion of the garters have been painted red to express the presence of the serpentine gap.

The background and darker trees are all made from silk ties, including the lining of a tie. The lighter aspens are batik with ink and thread painting. The aspens and landforms are free cut and fused. I used a thin cotton batting and Mistyfuse. Being snowed in with only a few fabrics, a stash of thrift store ties, and a view of the aspens prompted this technique.
