Inupiat villages along the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean are in imminent danger of being swept away by the effects of global climate change. Ice is forming later in the winter and permafrost is thawing. Fierce winter surf that used to break far from shore now breaks on the shoreline. Ancestral villages were once semi-nomadic; the people lived on the barrier islands only part of the year. In the early 1900s, the U.S. government and the Lutheran Church established permanent villages. Now the villages must move to higher ground.
