Childhood Taken: The Doffer Boys

Early 1900s photographs by Lewis W. Hine documenting the conditions of child labor have inspired a series of pieces, including this quilt. Through color and pattern, the piece attempts to capture the dangerous, shadowy environment of the cotton mills. Changing bobbins and spools as the machinery moved continuously often resulted in injury, and the fibrous workplace damaged youthful lungs, later coined “brown lung disease.”
