Not To Know But To Go On

Not To Know But To Go On is the result of a daily stitching practice that documents three years (2010-2013), beginning and ending on my birthday. The work addresses mortality, the connection of past and future, and the relentless rhythm of time itself.

I was inspired by the affirmative minimalism found in the colorful Finnish rugs of my heritage, yet this piece is hand stitched, not woven. An entire skein of cotton floss was used to mark each day by couching fabrics accumulated over a lifetime onto canvas. The whirl of time is thus made visible and sewn to a future not yet known.
