New Mexico Schoolhouse

My corner of the world is New Mexico. The Catholic Church built this old schoolhouse near my home in the early 1800's and it was used as a school for the next 100 years. It was closed in the mid 1940's and left vacant.  My ranches in New Mexico have stone ruins dating from the late 1700's. They still stand in spite of 100-degree heat, heavy snow and high winds.

Every time I pass these buildings, or pass the schoolhouse, I think of the people who once lived here in one of the remotest parts of the United States.  They built their homes and buildings out of dry stacked rock claimed from the land and covered the stone in hand blended materials that match the red clay of the desert. New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment.  There is truly no place like home.
