My Corner of the World

Every spring I become an archeologist. I live in a heritage house on the edge of the Grand River in southwestern Ontario, Canada. When spring floods recede, frost heaves deliver treasures which become the source of my rust paintings. This story-cloth connects me to the river, to the Scottish pioneers who first came here in the 1830's, and with the escaped slaves who arrived here even earlier. The type of construction and the running stitch are reminiscent of the kantha quilts of Bengal, and of the boro patchwork of the Japanese country folk. |
