This work was inspired by photographs of aged and decaying wood from the abandoned buildings in Virginia City, a 19th-century mining ghost town. Last year I viewed the works of painter Clyfford Still. I was inspired by his use of color and struck by the way painted surfaces echo the layering of the stains and patinas of the wood in my photographs.
