Connecting with others is the driving force behind my journey as a visual artist. My art is figurative. I am drawn to human and anthropomorphic forms. Experimenting with subtle gestures, color and words allows me to tell stories. Using fabric as a medium suggests my ideas are tactile. It is an invitation to be touched or embraced. My hope is to evoke an emotional response and make a spiritual connection. Whether fleeting or long term, these connections are the life force I use to build a "relationship quilt" in my heart. Images scroll down to view all Flying In My Dreams45" x 35" The inspiration for this piece was my dog, Lola. On her back, she looks like she is flying while sleeping. The three quilted circles represent the places, I imagine, she visits while flying in her dreams. Composition created using Adobe Photoshop and Waterlogue. Image printed on Bleached Fuji Silk Broadcloth. Machine Quilted on a longarm  A Cruel Twist of Fate67" x 52" This composition was created to tell the compelling immigrant story of my great- grandmother Estera Blumental. Her image appears 3 times to represent her tremendous strength. The short letters, written in familial fonts, describe the sequence of events. The three birds are the daughters she lost. A quilted tree symbolizes the family as it was in 2010. Two bare branches represent the lineages lost forever. The other branches, with rhinestones, represent the family that survived carrying Estera's family forward. Composition created in Photoshop, digitally printed on micro-denier suede, embellished with beads/rhinestones and machine quilted on a home sewing machine.  Grief Is The Price Of Love36" x 25" This composition explores grief. The poem, placed in a spherical format, conjures up a fortune teller or soothsayer in hopes of answering questions about death. Strong quilting, in a classic iron fence motif, and a fine veil keeps the reader on the side of the living. A reflection of the artist, in the deceased sunglasses, provides a brief/transient moment on the other side.  Childhood Exhilaration I35" x 52" My fondest childhood memories come from being near lakes and oceans. This composition is intended to share my favorite shoreline childhood memories . The story begins in the upper left hand corner of the quilt, where quiet family moments were spent under an umbrella. The child's hat and umbrella represents safety and parental protection. The multi-color striped border symbolizes the memory of all the umbrellas used to stake out home base. As a child, I fondly remember sitting under an umbrella listening to family stories, smelling the gentle breezes, and watching the waves. The forefront of the composition captures my favorite activity , being in the water and crashing waves.  Delimiting Self31" x 34" Delimiting self is about being boxed in with options. Three sides of the cube are faced and represent different paths. Indecision keeps the cube integrity intact. |
