For the past 32 years I have been supporting myself making contemporary art quilts that use color, fabric and the traditions of quilt making to create abstract landscapes that take the viewer into their own vision. My quilts are at once simple and also unfold into endless complexities as the individual fabric choices and shapes unfold. My work is made in blocks using a method I call quilt-as-you-go which I then join together and hand finish. I believe the technique adds to the meaning of the quilt. I made this quilt by piecing and sewing thin strips of cotton fabric through the cotton batting onto the back and then intensely quilting on top of the work. I then hand finish the quilt. This quilt is pieced and quilted using commercially available fabrics and cotton batting. I made this quilt of commercially available cotton fabrics which I pieced and quilted through the cotton batting onto the back. Then I quilted on top. All bindings hand finished.  blood moon rays40x80 inches Photo by Photo by John Polak This quilt is composed of two separate pieces that together create the feeling of the moon beams sweeping across the sky. I created it by piecing and sewing thin strips of cotton fabric through the cotton batting onto the back, quilting on top and hand finishing all the bindings.  seasons of the marsh--late summer32x72 inches Photo by John Polak This is part of a series of quilts I am making that use commercially available cottons, simple quilt as you go techniques and free hand quilting to capture a moment in time. As summer deepens into autumn, the colors of the marsh fade into brown while the grass dances with echoes of the sun against the sky. |
