Based upon the traditional mola reverse appliqué techniques developed by the Guna people of Panama, Nakayama’s work brings her Japanese aesthetic to this art form. Her works attempt to express in color many of the things that she experiences in everyday life. Purely geometric forms, such as we see in this piece, create a powerful visual statement.
